Nursing Negligence

This is one of the most utterly complex problem that nurses today are faced with. Just last week, a friend of mine working as a home care nurse in michigan gave me call that his colleague has just faced a lawsuit involving him being sued for nursing negligence because he forgot to remove a hot compress to a hemiplegic patient.

This is the kind of scenario that every nurse dreads of having each shift. It doesnt matter if youre a supervisor or anywhere in the first class nurses or just starting out. Being informed of your rights, responsibilities, and duties will equip you of becoming a well informed nurse.

A blog of mine has been recently launched and it is all about this topic. Its all about Nursing Negligence with the ultimate goal of empowering nurses who are planning to work in US, UK, or Canada or those who are already working in these countries.

As the saying goes, no man is ever an island. Here in my blog, I want to make sure you still feel at home every shift.

Wish me luck on this one!

Colostomy Care, Colostomy Diet and Ostomy Supplies

Having a Colostomy is one daunting plight for patients. In practicing my profession, I encountered almost zero patients who wore a smile on their face when they heard they will be going to face a life with a colostomy bag hanging on their abdomens.

A good website would be very useful in guiding you in various topics to manage your colostomy.

Colostomy Care
It is caring for a stoma. It includes how to clean the ostomy wound, how to disinfect it if you really need it to be cleaned among all other things.

Colostomy Diet
Colostomy diet is very important as your ostomy output will pretty much be affected by what you eat. Thus, a diet guide would come in handy for any ileostomy patient.

Ostomy Supplies
With this much brands, variations and lots of shinanigans out there, choosing the right Ostomy supplies is a daunting task. This website will definitely guide you through everything you need to know about ostomy supplies.

If you need anything about Colostomy, Colostomy Central is there to help you out.

Where To Find The Best Dentist?

Everybody needs a dentist. I was browsing over some blogs and websites around the internet to look for dental services that would suggest treatments available for my very and let me repeat that one, Very annoying toothache. Well, as they say, this comes around at least once in a lifetime, might as well enjoy it. This maybe true to some people but im definitely not one of them, thats for certain.

I came to a site that offers dental services in different parts of Canada and at first glance, I was certain that they are what im looking for. I was also able to navigate through their page, Vancouver dentist and there you can find information, offers and mind you, theyre the kind of offers that are very hard to resist. I also navigated over the site and found myself into yet, another area targeted page and this time, it was all about Montreal dentist. This page made use of easy to understand terms and offers that can give anyone a clear and concise information about their services. Same was also true for the Calgary dentist page.

It sure is better to live within those areas and have those dentists take care of this annoying pain that I have been having this past few days. Oh well, im gonna go and search for more information and ill be sure to let you know more about it when I come over great results.

Easy Health, Easy Pay

Wednesday, March 5, 2008

Have you noticed a very obvious trend in the health care industry lately? Do you know someone with pheo-chromo cytoma, ulcerative colitis or congestive heart failure? If so, this only means one thing - Health Care is in demand.

In my last clinical rotation, I was given the privilege to care for a patient with hypertensive cardio vascular disease. He was thin, lethargic, and most of all, weak. Upon my assessment and interaction with him, he told me that his deepest problem that time was financial constraint because he doesnt know where to get the money to pay for the health care services. This was the point where I realized the importance of payday loan.

My last personal interaction with him lasted for almost an hour and he expressed his whole concern to me. I wanted to help him but the most that I could do was to refer him to the nearest health care representative.

My friends, it may not occur to us now but it is very much important for us to know more about what really matters most and by that I mean we should invest for our future and be safe rather than be sorry.

Nursing and Insurance, What A Pair!

Thats right friends. I wanted to come up with an elaborate title but i guess my pick summed everything up.

For today's discussion, we are going to focus more on having a dependable security when working. And when I say security, I dont only mean physical but also financial and medical security. There is nothing more like sleeping in at night thinking that whatever happens tomorrow, you are assured of something you never wish to come true. This is where programs like home insurance come into play.

Insurance policies are everywhere right now. It is as if its something as necessary as a bottle ketchup when we eat french fries in our television escapades. Well, not exactly but you get my point.

Kidding aside, I think being secured will definitely be worth it. You can never be assured of what is going to happen in the future. One might never know what tomorrow will bring so it sure is better to be safe than sorry. Take it from me on this one, I have been there and done that. Just make sure you will not regret in the future if you loose a job you love so much or get sick just when you need the most financial resource you can get.

You Need Money To Be Healthy

Monday, January 21, 2008

The title I made is nothing less than a debatable opinion but if you ask me, realistically, you need to have money in order to have good nutrition, well-balanced diet and maintain the homeostasis that the body needs to be able to continue to grow and mature.

In urban cities like manila for example; ideally, if you are short of cash and still you want to get the most nutrition you can get, you have two options, one, you can plant vegetable on pots since there are not much space and two, you can always have someone do it for you. Most often, none of these measures are taken and people would often opt to buy instead. Some would consider payday loans and cash advance as a desperate measure but I think it should not be the case. As unfair as it may seem, we continue to live by this fact; you need money to be healthy.

Buy Reviews Online and Make Life Easier

Tuesday, January 8, 2008

Have you ever experienced having a day that it just seems like twenty four hours is never enough? This is pretty much a reality in college courses like nursing where thesis writing is very common. I personally experience this one especially if im on hospital duty and on the other hand, my lecture subjects demand me of academic essay writing on so short a time.

This gave me an idea, why not buy essays online? I mean lets face it, in today's world, if you are not street smart, you are left among other people who are idle and mediocre. Im looking to avail of their services when the time really demands for it.

Eye Care 101 - What You Need To Know

Saturday, December 22, 2007

Lets face it. Without our eyes, we are nothing. We rely so much in our eyes that more often that frequently, we abuse them thinking that they will always stay what they are presently. I actually know alot of people who just dont care about their eyes and whats even sadder is that, they are not eve aware of it.

Eye care is essential to maintaining the health of our eyes. People with eye diseases that greatly affect their vision face many problems. They are physically hampered by impaired vision. They are not able to perform daily activities like driving or working. Some are barely able to see or have lost their vision entirely. They are also faced with emotional stress. People with dramatic eye problems face many issues that can lead to solitude and depression. This strain also affects friends and families.

They are not able to enjoy everyday moments or special events. Eye problems can also be very costly to individuals that's the main reason why prevention is always better that cure. Eye vitamins will help alot of people in this endeavor and so will Macular Degeneration Vitamins and AREDS.

I hope this post will really enhance your knowledge and basis for your eye care.Merry Christmas everyone!

Another Alternative To YM, Chat Lines

Saturday, December 15, 2007

Yes lads, do you remember the old and cranky free chat that Yahoo Messenger used to offer us? They actually started out very good and very secure for us and i have to be honest, they were really satisfying during the early days of their chat lines.

Today, I have come across a site that offers phone chat and personalized voice chat especially for teens. They are still very new and i think they would be very interesting for you so i posted them up here. Check them out!

Bad Credit Offers, Avoid Them!

This is my tip for today ladies and gentlemen. Bad credit loans is so widespread today that we dont even have the chance to distinguish which one can really help us especially when we need a personal loan for health care. As you might already know, health care today costs more than what people spend on daily necessities.

I actually visited the site and compared the offers that the web site listed in connection to their effort to give you guys a better glimpse of what each credit offers. and I think they did a pretty good job doing so. Check them out!

Weaning, An Intergral Part Of Growing Up

Saturday, December 8, 2007

Today, my guest blogger is none other than my cousin. She always wanted me to have her as guest to this blog so, here she is. Tell me what you think of her writing guys. She will be giving you tips about weaning.

Our daughter is ready to be weaned as she already graduated from breastfeeding and as a result I have been tasked with the preparation of the food. Thankfully, it is one of my areas of ability in the parenting field and I have peeled, boiled, pureed and put fresh apples into tiny, little containers.

The baby rice has been on the menu for the past week, and it has gone down quite well, but unfortunately the transition to apple has been less successful, perhaps as it comes out rather tart at the end of the process. Why, I don't know, but no doubt some nutritionist will explain.

Second choice was carrot, and two large ones were peeled, diced and boiled before the hand blender came into action and the resultant mash was placed into the tiny boxes, which are probably 1.5 inches cubed, hence the picture.

However, pureed carrot has the tendency to stain badly and irredeemably, so daughter has to be fed carefully and with a bib, a cloth to catch splashes, something to wipe child, chair, clothes and parents and at least four hands to manage everything. Like her biggest brother, carrots are much appreciated, and are going down a treat, so I am scouring through the recipe books for the next exciting mush to prepare.

Make You Babies Healthy, Choose Only The Best

Tuesday, December 4, 2007

Having a baby is a very stressful time for the whole family especially for the mother. It is a time where we get in touch with the values that our mothers experienced way back when we were being conceived and eventually came out of our mother's wombs.

Babies are precious beings. Mothers only give the best for the baby; from the clothes that the baby wears to the baby products that the baby is going to play with up to the food and supplements that the little angel would be nourished on, we only want the very best that money can offer. With this in mind, having a definite plan of the things that the baby will really spare us alot of time and money.

I found a website that compares baby equipment in the internet today and rates it according to some expert's advice and opinions on the products. They also offer baby product reviews that lets you browse over to the merchandise that you are looking for and saves you the time of referring to others regarding the products advantages, disadvantages and also the corresponding quality.

This is great because I can really say that mothers get stressed easily during this stage of their life especially when things pile up and she could not keep up with the workload. Sites like these would be very beneficial to every mother so in the coming posts, im going to let you know of any other sites that I might come across with. Till then, be safe, be healthy and be well.

How Teenagers Need Our Help. . .

Wednesday, November 28, 2007

Drug rehab is one of the places on earth that I dont want to go to. Not that im biased about it but I just dont like the feeling of being branded as one who already went to a rehab facility wherever. People are thinking about the same thing but what about those that didnt have the time nor the choice to think about this?

Statistics say that smoking and drinking alcohol predisposes teenagers to more potent substance abuse like cocaine and marijuana. It is like a gradual process of learning wherein you learn first the basic of the subject for instance medicine, you have to first master the concept of anatomy and physiology before progressing through the higher level of clinical learnings. Same is true with alcohol and drug addiction.

While some prefer to undergo drug treatment, an increasing number of troubled teens do not even admit being an abusive user or an addict. This I think, is the first and the hardest step in going into drug rehabilitation-the awareness that one is into substance abuse.

There are alot of ways you can help someone in your peers, in your family or even just someone you know on how he or she can cope up with this very difficult stage. You can contact the social services of your local government and some people would be very happy to lend you a hand. Another thing maybe is online interventions wherein you can contact a non-profit website and tell them about your situation and how you want your friend of family member be treated. They would be more than glad to give you a little of assistance that you need.

In addition to this contact form, you can also find all the information that you need about the different substance and drug addiction and its interventions on how to go about it and how to help someone who is in this very difficult time of their life. They might not be aware of it or even deny it but your help will always be appreciated sooner or later.

So, to close this post, teenage years only pass once in a person's life. Let us not ruin it with substances that would only be of detriment to our loved ones. They need our help.

Looking Good, Feeling Good. . . An Ingredient For Wellness

I think this is the best random title I have decided to put up in the history of this blog.lol Anyways, yes, theres a very good reason why I decided to name this post as such. I figured out that if you want to really feel good, you have to look good. Agree?

You have to! I think confidence and self-esteem plays a very vital role in promoting wellness. Take an instance in your life where you have to face alot of people for a speech or something. One of the best things to prepare for it is to have the best of confidence of self esteem. right?

In line with this theme, looking good is almost immediately associated with the clothes you wear and how you wear them. People might not be very aware of it but clothing tells so much about a person's personality. As they say, what you wear is who you are. Personally, I wear nudie jeans on casual days to portray that my personality goes with the flow of time. wait a minute, do you know what a nudie is?

I found a site wherein they offer a consultant service of products they offer to consumers so when you shop, you have the privilege of asking an expert an advice on what is the best one for you. In my case, the representative referred me to seven for all mankind and so far, I think they are right and I look forward to purchasing some products when I receive payments this month.

So, if you want a some useful disability insurance information, you can ask me about it in my contact form above or leave a comment below.

Murphy's Nursing Law

Monday, October 15, 2007

  • When you need the money, your shift is cancelled; when you have a weekend planned, you have to do overtime.
  • Realizing the patient you've just injected has a serious infection causes you to stab yourself with the used needle.
  • A 500 pound patient needs all care, while your 80 pound patient needs a finger dressing ... and your colleague has a "bad back."
  • It's you're first night shift for three years. And it's a full moon.
  • You're doing the "Only 27 more minutes of the shift from hell happy-dance", only to turn around to see your supervisor standing there.
  • In a critical situation, the most highly qualified clinician will offer the most advice and the least support.
  • The absurdity of the suggestion is directly proportional to the distance from the bedside.
  • As soon as you finish a thirty minute dressing the doctor will come in, and take a look at the wound.
  • The disoriented patient always comes from a Nursing Home whose beautiful paperwork has no phone number on it.
  • Your nose will itch the very moment your gloved hands get contaminated with bodily fluids.
  • The patient who has been dying all night finally meets his maker 12.5 minutes before shift change.
  • You walk out of a patient's room after you've asked them if they need anything: they will put the call bell on as you are about three quarters the way down the hall.
  • The patient furthest away from the nurses' station rings the call bell more often than the patient nearest to the nurses' station.
  • The doctor with the worst handwriting and most original use of the English Language will be responsible for your most critical patient.
  • You always remember "just one more thing" you need after you've gowned, gloved, and masked and gone into that isolation room.
  • The correct depth of compression in adult CPR is a bit less than the depth you just reached when you broke those ribs.
  • When you cancel extra staff because it's so quiet, you are guaranteed a rash of admissions.
  • If you wear a new white uniform, expect to be thrown up on.
Corollary: Residents always poop on your brand new shoes.
  • When management smiles at you, be very, very afraid ...
  • Staffing will gladly send you three aides--but you have to float two of your RNs.
  • As soon as you discontinue the IV line, more fluids will be ordered.
  • Mandatory meetings are always scheduled after you've had the night from hell and just want to go home to bed.
  • You always forget what it was you wanted after you get to the supply room. You always remember when you get back to the other end ...
  • Doctors only ask your name when the patient isn't doing well.
  • Success occurs when no one is looking, failure occurs when the boss is watching.
  • As soon as you've ordered the pizzas, 25 patients show up at the ER registration desk along with three ambulances all with cardiac arrests!
  • For every action, there is an equal and opposite criticism.
  • Ten seconds after you have finished giving a complete bed bath and changing the bed, the patient has a giant code brown.
  • If a patient needs four pills, the packet will contain three.
  • Your buddies who were reading the paper at the nurses' desk a minute ago always disappear when you need help ...
  • Expect to get your pay raise the same day the hospital raises the parking rates (and other charges)
  • The better job you do, the more work you can expect to be handed ...
  • The amount of clean linen available is inversely proportional to your immediate needs.
  • The more confused and impulsive a patient is, the less chance there is for a family member or friend to sit with the patient.
  • The perfect nurse for the job will apply the day after that post is filled by some semi qualified idiot.
  • If only one solution can be found for a problem, then it is usually a stupid solution.
  • When the nurse on the preceding shift has surrounded the patient with absorbent pads, the code brown will hit every sheet and miss every pad.
  • Rest assured that when you are in a hurry, the nurse's notes have not been written.
  • When you are starting an IV on an uncooperative patient, or dealing with a huge code brown, there is a phone call for you and it's that crabby physician that you have been paging all morning.
  • Fire drills always occur on your day from hell
  • The first person in line when the clinic opens will not require urgent care. The sickest person will arrive 5 minutes before closing: "I thought I'd feel better"
  • The Nursing Catch-22:
If you're running around horribly busy, you're unorganized and need to prioritize, but if you're not running around horribly busy, you're lazy and need to find more work to do.

Philippine Nursing : Is it just for the Green Bucks?

Friday, October 12, 2007

Read this With Caution. . .

I had my blog hopping just a while ago and i found this pic made me wonder: Are we Filipinos, just after dollars to be working and living in abroad? Well, personally, i have to say im bitter-sweet about this issue. First off, what will you do if youre gonna stay here in the homeland, be patriotic and all those blah blahs and yet, work every peso to spend for the family? I mean, its just not practical to stay here. Secondly, going abroad is the reason why Philippine's Corrupted, Trashy and ill-centered Economy is still afloat. What do you think is the reason why the peso got higher since Estrada's bogus acts? And thirdly, Filipinos by tradition is just so overwhelmed to go abroad. Its like the moslem belief Haj or the pilgrimage to mecca. For filipinos, their life is not complete if they will not be able to go abroad. Think about the preference for IMPORTED. C'mon, tell you you dont prefer foreign branded shoes for marikina-made products. To top it all off, Filipinos are innately ambitious, which is not bad. Not bad at all. As the song goes, "kasalanan ba sa langit kung humingi ako ng isang himala". Well, not just be too ambitious that you cant reach it. Its wiser to think realistically than positively. Just a word of thought.

Im done with the Bitter part, and now for the other side of the coin, Filipinos are far better english speakers than THE REST OF THE ASIAN NATIONS. And i say it with pride and glory. Any nationalities that has something to tell me about it, im glad to hear from you. ;) Heck, theres even more english speakers here than in England. Thanks to the ever productive filipino genes, we reached 87 Million as of last year and just occupied every habitat available around the globe. Another thing is that, Filipinos, are by genes industrious. Think about this: Americans work get paid by hours and filipinos do it by 15-days or some, even monthly. I mean, the work of filipinos especially in the rural areas compared to the ones in NY for example is incomparable. If a farmer would be paid per hour on the rate same as in US, theyll be the biggest money earners in the Phils. This im assured of. And lastly, Philippine nurses are destined to be great abroad. We Simply Are The Best Nurses There Is! What can you say?

Nursing Models : Casey's Model of Nursing

Casey's Model of Nursing was developed in 1988 by Anne Casey whilst working on the Paediatric Oncology Unit at the Great Ormond Street Hospital London. The focus of the model is on working in partnership with children and their families, and was one of the earliest attempts to develop a model of practice specifiaclly for child health nursing. The model has been developed in other areas of England to focus upon local aspects of practice.

It comprises the five concepts of child, family, health, environment and the nurse. The philosophy behind the model is that the best people to care for the child is the family with help from various professional staff. There should therefore be a partnership between parent and carers. Another paediatric nursing model developed by Smith in 'Children's nursing in practice: The Nottingham Model' emphasises the family as client. The Casey Model sees the child as the client.

-Casey's Model of Nursing

Nursing Theories : Tidal Model

The Tidal Model is a model for the promotion of mental health developed by Professor Phil Barker, Poppy Buchanan-Barker and their colleagues. The Tidal Model focuses on the continuous process of change inherent in all people. It seeks to reveal the meaning of people's experiences, emphasising the importance of their own voice and the power of metaphor when carrying out assessment. It aims to empower people to reclaim control of their lives using the three domains of self, world and others.

In order for the practitioner to begin the process of engagement using the Tidal Model, the following needs to be accepted:

  • that recovery is possible
  • that change is inevitable - nothing lasts
  • that ultimately, people know what is best for them
  • that the person possess all the resources they need to begin the recovery journey
  • that the person is the teacher and the helpers are the pupils
  • that the helper needs to be creatively curious, to learn what needs to be done to help the person, now!

The philosophy underpinning the model comes from research into what people need for care in mental health carried out by Prof. Barker and Dr. Chris Stevenson at the University of Newcastle, UK in 1995.

Three domains

The process of engaging with the person in distress takes place in three discrete domains. With the Tidal Model, the practitioner explores these dimensions to be aware of the situation in the present time and determine what needs to happen now.

  • Self domain is where people feel their world of experience. There is an emphasis on making people feel more secure and the practitioner helps the person develop a Security Plan to reduce threats to the person or others around them.
  • World domain is where people hold their story. The Tidal Model practitioner uses a specific form of inquiry to explore this story collaboratively, revealing its hidden meanings, the person's resources, and to identify what needs to be done to assist recovery.
  • Others domain represents the various relationships the person has: past, present and future. This includes Tidal Model practitioners but also other members of the health and social care team, friends, family and supporters.

The power of metaphor

The Tidal Model uses the metaphor of water and describes how people in distress can become emotionally, physically and spiritually shipwrecked. It sees the experience of health and illness as a fluid, rather than a stable phenomenon, and life as journey undertaken on an ocean of experience. It proposes that in mental health, the factors associated with a psychiatric crisis, or its more enduring consequences, can be diverse as well as cumulative. It states that by appreciating this metaphor, nurses or other helpers will gain a greater understanding of the person's current situation and the inevitability of change. With this, the helper may, in time, be guided to care with the person beginning their journey from the state of being washed ashore, drowning or being otherwise marooned by their life problems. Following the rescue, exploration can then begin as to what caused the storm in the first place and what needs to be done immediately to set sail again.

The Ten Commitments

The values of the Tidal Model can be distilled into ten commitments:

  1. Value the voice - the person's story is paramount
  2. Respect the language - allow people to use their own language
  3. Develop genuine curiosity - show interest in the person's story
  4. Become the apprentice - learn from the person you are helping
  5. Reveal personal wisdom - people are experts in their own story
  6. Be transparent - both the person and the helper
  7. Use the available toolkit - the person's story contains valuable information as to what works and what doesn't
  8. Craft the step beyond - the helper and the person work together to construct an appreciation of what needs to be done 'now'
  9. Give the gift of time - time is the midwife of change
  10. Know that change is constant - this is a common experience for all people
